Romanian food retail market hits record EUR 30 billion in 2024

Romania’s food retail sector closed 2024 with a record turnover of 149 billion lei (€30 billion), marking a 4.35% increase compared to 2023, according to data from RisCo.ro. The sector’s combined net profit reached 4.1 billion lei.

Lidl remains the undisputed leader in Romania’s retail landscape, posting revenues of 23.97 billion lei and a net profit of 1.22 billion lei in 2024. The German-owned retailer employs 12,735 people nationwide.

Following closely, Kaufland, also part of the Schwarz Group, reported a turnover of 19.58 billion lei and a net profit of 1.15 billion lei, supported by a workforce of 14,592 employees.

Profi, Romania’s largest proximity retailer, ranked third with revenues of 14.12 billion lei. However, the company recorded a net loss of 210 million lei, primarily due to high expansion costs as it continues to grow its network of neighborhood stores.

Carrefour, operating across multiple formats, hypermarkets, supermarkets, express stores, and online, reported revenues of 12.54 billion lei and a net profit of 52.4 million lei.
Mega Image followed with revenues of 10.58 billion lei and profits of 116.9 million lei.

Penny, part of the German Rewe Group, ranked sixth in the market, recording revenues of 9.44 billion lei and a net profit of 224.9 million lei, and Auchan closed the top tier with revenues of 7.74 billion lei, reporting a net loss of 8.6 million lei.

Between 2022 and 2024, Romania’s retail market grew from 127.5 billion lei to 149.7 billion lei, reflecting a slowing growth trend, from a robust +17.5% in 2022 to +4.35% in 2024. The market remains fully dominated by international groups, primarily from Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
