Romanian interest in China as a travel destination has surged in 2025, with official data showing around 36,000 Romanians visiting the country in the first seven months of the year. The figure marks a 78 percent increase compared with the same period in 2024, following Beijing’s decision to lift visa requirements for Romanian citizens at the end of last year.
In 2024, roughly 35,000 Romanians traveled to China, twice as many as in 2023, after the visa exemption was first introduced. Popular routes include Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Guilin-Yangshuo, Zhangjiajie, and Chengdu.
Romanian travelers are increasingly drawn to high-speed train experiences, cultural circuits, traditional festivals, natural landscapes, and the chance to see giant pandas.
The tourism exchange works both ways. According to Romania’s National Institute of Statistics, 21,682 Chinese tourists visited Romania in the first half of 2025, the highest number of arrivals from Asia.
Chinese visitors are particularly interested in Bucharest, Brașov, Sibiu, the Black Sea coast, Maramureș, Bucovina, and the Danube Delta. Among their favorite attractions are Bran Castle, Peleș Castle, Bucharest’s Old Town, Sighișoara, and the Turda Salt Mine.
Strengthening this growing connection, the Chinese Cultural Center in Bucharest is hosting the China Tourism Fair from October 10 to 12, 2025, organized in partnership with the National Association of Travel Agencies (ANAT).
Visitors can explore destinations across China—from Beijing and Shanghai to Guilin, Zhangjiajie, Xinjiang, and Hainan—alongside special travel offers, live presentations, and cultural demonstrations such as tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and traditional cuisine.
The fair brings together travel agencies, airlines, and cultural institutions from both countries, serving as a meeting point for tourism professionals and travelers interested in discovering more about each destination.
